MIRABEAU: Marshalls and marksmanship (2.2.09)

Mirabeau B. Lamar

Mirabeau doesn’t understand why one point on a marksmanship test should lead to the unplanned retirement of Chief Deputy Willie King — a veteran of 33 years with the Muscogee County Marshall’s Office. Mirabeau may be confused but he thought this office only served court documents. So what, Mirabeau wonders, is the significance of a score on a marksmanship test?

Mirabeau is finding it hard to sleep at night knowing the clock is clicking on analog television. Is Mirabeau the only one who’s frightened?

Mirabeau is glad he’s not a college basketball coach. Look at what’s happened to the coaches of the men’s teams at Georgia and Alabama? Mirabeau thinks the same thing could happen at Columbus State University this season.

Mirabeau wonders where all those ideas for crime prevention programs were hiding before the formation of the mayor’s commission. Could it be the smell of possible grant money that brought them out of the shadows?

Mirabeau hears you shouldn’t seat Assistant City Attorney Jaimie DeLoach next to District Attorney Julia Slater if you’re having a dinner party. Jaimie, Mirabeau is told, believes Julia continues to misrepresent one of her legal opinions in public.

Mirabeau notes the retirement of Philadelphia Eagles line coach Pete Jenkins after 37 years in football. Mirabeau remembers when Jenkins coached at Baker High and at Central High in Phenix City.

When noted author and humorist Roy Blount spoke at the Columbus Library on Sunday he discussed the different ways the sound a pig makes is spelled in different languages. Mirabeau thinks Blount should have talked about ways the sound a duck makes is spelled around the world. That’s been a problem for the voice of the AFLAC duck in Japan.

Mirabeau welcomes home Ian Sebastian. Mirabeau saw him as an overpowering pitcher at Columbus High then saw him pitch on TV for the University of Georgia against the Atlanta Braves. Mirabeau notices him on the current roster of Columbus State University after a side trip to Western Carolina.

Mirabeau is impressed with the loyalty of Assistant City Manager Lisa Goodwin. She showed up to make a presentation to Columbus Council just days after the death of her father.
