MIRABEAU: Who will mind the store? (8.21.08)

Mirabeau has to ask. Who will mind the store Monday evening while residents of MidTown march into Wynnton Methodist Church to share their thoughts about crime in the neighborhood to the mayor and police chief?
Mirabeau learned something the other day. Sifting through a school board agenda Mirabeau discovered the school district gives $50,000 a year to the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce for the Partners in Education program.
It is hard for Mirabeau to accept the Ledger-Enquirer putting its six-story office building on 12th Street up for rent. Next thing you know they’ll put stacks of ads on the local news page. Never mind, they’re already doing that.
Mirabeau hopes it doesn’t rain on Country Barbecue’s Midnight Express Saturday night. Mirabeau also prays for dry weather when he organizes a protest outside the restaurant demanding the return of creamed corn.
Mirabeau has a piece of information to share with critics of the school district’s palatial administration building. Mirabeau reports the cost of construction is going down. A change order lowers the cost from $15,600,000 to $15,534,655. So there.
Mirabeau did the math. There are more hours of Law & Order on TV than there is of the Olympics.
Mirabeau had a brainstorm. Mirabeau finally read through the manual on the cell phone he bought several months ago. It's amazing what that phone can do.
Mirabeau can’t keep up with Chris Leak — the coach, not the quarterback. One day he coaches a state championship baseball team at Pacelli. The next day he takes a job at Northside High. He no sooner got on the payroll in Muscogee County than he was off to Alabama.
Mirabeau is getting down on his knees in gratitude of a gallon of regular gas costing less than a venti sized skinny latte with sugar-free hazelnut.
Mirabeau isn’t campaigning for a job but if drafted Mirabeau will serve as superintendent of schools in Muscogee County — as long as they allow him to attend just one school board meeting a year.
Will someone tell Mirabeau the difference between a regular game and an exhibition game in high school football?
Mirabeau is impressed with how comfortable Mayor Jim Wetherington is sharing the spotlight. He praised Rep. Calvin Smyre’s efforts to pass the 1 percent sales tax and then singled out former Mayor Frank Martin’s role in the Kenneth Walker settlement.
Mirabeau wonders: “If Paul Olson talks in a forest and no one is around to hear him, does he make a sound?”
Mirabeau can’t believe the city approved construction of more than 500 apartments at Columbus Park Crossing without leaning on the developer to shell out cash to help out on future traffic problems.
Dr. Jim Andrews has Mirabeau’s vote as the Atlanta Braves MVP for 2008.
Davis Broadcasting again has the rights to broadcast high school football games in Columbus and to Mirabeau that can only mean one thing: another season of Cliff Rutledge at the microphone. Does anybody want to buy Mirabeau’s radio real cheap?
