Mirabeau B. Lamar comes home

|
Mirabeau B. Lamar has written flowery poetry, worked for newspapers, held high public office and been a hero at war. Now he comes home to Georgia as a regular columnist for Richard Hyatt’s Columbus.
Adding a journalist of Lamar’s stature to the site is a boost to readers and subscribers of the new source for local news and opinion. It puts newsmakers on notice that the veteran reporter will be watching and listening, said founder Richard Hyatt.
“No one can be everywhere so Mirabeau will serve as your surrogate eyes and ears,” Hyatt said. “He will be a watchdog, and when the occasion calls for it he’ll turn into an attack-dog.”
A native Georgian, Lamar spent much of his career in Texas where the popular politician was known as “the father of education.” Before going to Texas, he founded the Columbus Enquirer.
Hyatt said Lamar’s perspective of the community is like no other journalist in the news business since he understands the past and is concerned about the future.
“Officials will find their names in his column at moments they don’t expect. Sometimes they’ll be elated. Sometimes they’ll duck and dodge. His column will be like no other,” Hyatt said.
